Geographical location
The Siberian territory spans over three million square miles. It stretches West-East for 2.25 thousand miles – from the Eastern mountainside of the Urals to the Far East and South -North for two thousand miles – from the borders of Kazakhstan, Mongolia and China to the Arctic Ocean shore. The boundary between Western and Eastern Siberia runs mainly along Ob and Yenisey rivers. The biggest cities pof Siberia are Irkutsk, Khabarovsk, Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk and Omsk. Western Siberia, although called Western, is actually located in the geographical centre of Russia.
The Krasnoyarsk Territory is situated in the Asian part of the Russian Federation between the 51' N and 81' N latitude, and 78' and 113' East longitude. It extends from the North Arctic Ocean in the North 3 000 kilometers southward to the Sayan Mountain system. The widest part of the territory is 1 250 kilometers, and along the Trans - Siberian railway it extends 650 kilometers. The northernmost point of the Territory is Cape Cheluskin. It is also the northernmost point of Russia’s mainland and that of the Asian continent.
Area
The Krasnoyarsk Territory occupies 2,4 million square kilometers or about 14% of Russia. It could easily contain an area equal to 4,5 Frances or 10 Great Britains or 880 States of Luxemburg. The Krasnoyarsk Territory equals one-fourth that of the USA or one – third that of Australia.
Climate
Can be described as sharply continental. An average temperatures in January varies from –18C in the south of the region to –36C in the north. Average temperatures in July also from: +10C to +20C. Krasnoyarsk, situated on the Yenisy, could be called a southern city according to Siberian standards. Climate here is not as severe as in Taimir or Evenkiya. During the summer the temperature very often rises to +30C, but in winter it drops to –30C.
The Capital City
Krasnoyarsk is an administrative centre of Territory is the City of Krasnoyarsk with a population of about 1 000 0000. The city stands on both banks of the Yenisey River where the latter is crossed by the Trans-Siberian Railroad.
